Packing is never a fun thing and it can take forever but if you are going to do it then make sure it’s done right. This little guide will help you achieve the perfect move with hopefully no breakages.
- Clear plastic boxes from stores like IKEA and the container store are great to pack items you will want straight away like cookware and bathroom items, cleaning materials and bedding.
- A remarkable way to save on packing materials is to wrap breakables in clothing.
- Clean pairs of socks fit perfectly in mugs and glasses and stop them being smashed in a move.
- Label any box you’re packing with what’s in it and which room it is meant to go to, for example plates and cups will be marked on the box along with the kitchen.
- If you are packing up plates then make sure you pack them in a vertical manor. Not only will it save items being broken but it will also make it easier to unpack the plates.
- If you purchase some stretch wrap from a box store you can use it to wrap up cupboards and boxes to stop them opening during the move. Most movers will also have this to help you with the packing.
- Suitcases can be used to pack clothing and anything else you wish to shift.
- Another great way to pack up clothing in a closet is just bunch the items all together and slide a trash bag from the bottom up the clothing. Not only will keep the clothing protected but it will keep it organized and easy to hang on the other end of the move.
- Most movers have insurance which means if something breaks they will compensate you which is great. If you do the move yourself and break anything you are out of luck.
- If you are packing and taking the fridge freezer, please make sure you defrost it at least a day before the move. Try and use up all the food you might have before you move. Do your last major shop a week and half before you move and don’t pick up to many items that need to be frozen of refrigerated.
- If you have pets then try and get a sitter while the move is going on, the last thing you need is pets running around or escaping while movers are coming in or out of your place.
- Any flammable liquids or gas canisters should be moved by yourself, most movers will not take anything that can endanger their staff or your items in a closed space.
- Color coding on boxes can help let you know which boxes will go where. Green can be the kitchen or blue can be the bathroom and so on.
- Laundry bins and hampers can be used to pack up items like bedding and clothing which can help.
